Activities & Projects
The Rajagiri College of Social Sciences has established a Research Institute in 1972, to spearhead research and training in the field of social welfare, community development, and women empowerment. The roots of the Institute have journeyed across the districts of Kerala and in association with various International /National/State departments/Corporate agencies it has undertaken Research Studies (Sponsored and Non-Sponsored) of national and regional relevance, Tribal Development programmes, Training/ Workshops, Watershed Management programmes, Awareness Generation Programmes, Women Studies/Activities, Certificate Courses on Research Methodology and Documentation/Publications.
a. Research Studies

b. Action Research Projects – (Jalanidhi Projects)
With a wide vision that research should lead to action, the institute expanded its spectrum of activities to include Watershed Management and related activities. The institute has successfully completed 2 Jalanidhi projects, one at Nilamboor, Malappuram district and the other at Chennamangalam, Ernakulam district and another two projects are ongoing – one at Vannapuram Grama Panchayat, Idukki district and the other at Nedumkunnam Grama Panchayat, Kottayam district.
Training programmes is yet another area where the Institute has been very active for more than half a decade. In the past, more than 400 training programmes for various stakeholders viz; SC & ST medical/engineering entrants, cooks of tribal hostels, family counselors, functionaries of voluntary organizations and corporate bodies, probation officers, NGO representatives, health professionals, functionaries etc. Major ones:

d. Tribal Development Programmes
Over the years, a number of programmes visualizing the overall development of the tribes in the state have been implemented by the Institute. The institute has been accorded the accreditation of ‘A category’ in undertaking tribal development programmes by the Scheduled Tribes Development Department, Govt. of Kerala. e. Awareness Generation Programmes (AGP)
Awareness programms on topics viz. road safety, health & hygiene, cancer; HIV/AIDS etc. were organized in different communities/ panchayaths with the support of various govt. and non-government departments/agencies. These programmes were implemented through workshops, awareness camps, competitions, street plays, rallies and padayatras and IEC materials.
f. Road Safety Promotion Activities
Over the years, the Institute has carried out more than 200 road safety awareness programmes in the various communities, educational institutions and corporate agencies across Ernakulam district.
Considering the importance of the Road safety and to mark the golden Jubilee of the College and the third year (2004-05) of the conduct of the road safety programmes, the Research Institute, has set up a Road Safety Cell to co-ordinate the various programmes related to Road Safety. A number of programmes has been carried out on a regular basis in this regard especially for the drivers of Corporate agencies like; Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharath Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), Cochin International Air Port Ltd. (CIAL), etc.
g. Women Studies/ Activities - Center for Women’s Studies and Development (CWSD)
The Institute has initiated a centre which focuses on real issues faced by women and strives to create a voice and safe environment for all women in Kerala through advocacy, leadership development Public hearings, legal awareness campaigns, formation of self-help groups, and initiation of income generating programmes. The center promotes women’s studies and women empowerment programmes. The areas on which the center concentrated in the recent past were: domestic violence, gender issues, economic empowerment, gender workshops and community engagement programmes.
h. Certificate Courses
In addition to the various activities mentioned above, the institute has been engaged in imparting courses on the following Subjects: Over the years 15 courses have been undertaken under the sponsorship of various institutions including Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, University Grants Commission (UGC) and Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
- Research Methodology Course for Professors/ Teachers.
- Advanced Research Methodology Course for Professionals working in the Govt. Depts. /NGOs, Academics and Research scholars.
- SPSS Course for Teachers, Research Guides and Ph.D Scholars.
- Research Methodology Course for Ph. D students in Social Sciences, (Commencing in February 25th to March 5th 2016) .
The institute has a publication wing that focuses on the dissemination of the findings and conclusions of the various research studies. The reports of all the training programmes organized are also documented for academic reference.
j. Consultancy Services
Consultancy for Carrying out Annual Performance Assessment of Local Self Governments (LSGs) in Kerala under KLGSDP. The Research Institute and Sutra Consultants Odisha were the consultants of the Govt. of Kerala in its implementation of the prestigious project ‘Kerala Local Government Service Delivery Project (KLGSDP)’ supported by the World Bank.
Performance assessment of all the 1038 LSGs comprising 978 Grama Panchayats and 60 Municipalities was carried out on the 4 themes viz; 1. Planning and Budgeting, 2.Project Execution and Service Delivery, 3.Accounting, Financial Reporting and Audit, and 4.Participation, Transparency and Accountability. Further, Quality Assurance Audit of 10% of the LSGs from each of the 14 districts of Kerala was held. The project made use of the Expertise of; Institutional specialist, Finance and Procurement Audit Specialist, Safeguard Specialist, Statistical Analyst, IT Specialist and Training Specialist in successfully carrying out the assignment.
